By now, many users have flooded Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter with simple black squares for “Blackout Tuesday,” an online showing of solidarity with the nationwide demonstrations against police brutality. Despite the significance of the trending social media movement, some activists are raising concerns about “Blackout Tuesday” posts blocking out important protest updates under the “#BlackLivesMatter” hashtag, which is now filled to the brim with black squares. “If you are participating in this, don’t use the tag #BlackLivesMatter,” actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani tweeted. “It’s pushing down important and relevant content.”
