CNN - Bernard Madoff, the mastermind behind a $20 billion Ponzi scheme — the largest financial fraud in history, has just been announced to have passed away at age 82 while serving a 150-year sentence in Federal Prison. Madoff's death today at the Federal Medical Center in the prison in Butner, North Carolina, was in fact confirmed by the US Bureau of Prisons. A cause of death has not been released at this time. "Bernie, up until his death, lived with guilt and remorse for his crimes," Madoff's attorney Brandon Sample said. "Although the crimes Bernie was convicted of have come to define who he was -- he was also a father and a husband. He was soft spoken and an intellectual. Bernie was by no means perfect. But no man is."
Notorious Ponzi Schemer Bernie Madoff Dies in Jail
Bernie Madoff, the notorious man behind the largest ponzi scheme in history, has died of natural causes in prison in North Carolina. He was 82. In 2009, Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison after pleading guilty to the scheme that saw more than $60 billion on paper vanish overnight, with thousands of victims losing their promised fortunes. One of those victims, Maureen Ebel, was once a wealthy socialite — until she lost $5 million to Madoff’s con and turned to cleaning houses to survive.
